One of the oldest wholesale buzzing markets in Delhi has always intrigued me because of its labyrinth roads, old shops run by septuagenarians, who are mostly still there, food stalls that serve Delhi special items that taste so good only there, and of course, the wholesale shops for all things fancy.
This market is called so because of its original shape, as designed by Princess Jahanhara, committed by then Delhi emporer Shah Jahan, in the moon shape with Yamuna’s channels flowing through it. It would have been beautiful then, but now it’s better to keep your eyes off the streets and above the eyesight level. Pavements aren’t well kept and often pilfered with waste from the stalls nearby, and above, you can see a messy network of electric and telephone wires, which makes it a photographer’s paradise. It was designed for Jahan for the moonlight to trickle in … I doubt if it is in most streets; even sunlight comes in. With all of this said, we all rush to it for its wares, more for food, and street shots.
Some of them are here.
The street on one side starts with Gurudwara and could see a family waiitng on the stool shaped projections on the street near gurudwara.
