Singapore — a desi glimpse: Photo essay
Was amazed at the Indianness we had conjured up in that land in a little corner. — Little India. A clean South India is what it can be described as.
Was there for being part of PMA — Product Marketing Alliance Singapore Chapter. As usual with my camera and yoga mat in tow, I started walking to quarters in search of glimpses which amused me, once official duties were well attended. A glimpse of that here — https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/product-marketing-aliance-singapore-chapter-nov-2023-learnings-4hnqc/?trackingId=Tkw1NAxiufsRt4HdMbiWRQ%3D%3D
Started my sojourn with a great Asthanga session with Martha at the Nilayam, till then I wasn't aware of the Indianness of Little India surrounding this center. This experience was also unique as at Nilayam John and Martha follow not instruction-led classes, but individual practice which is guided by one of them. An hour and more with oneself was what that practice made me have and it was amazing with emphasis guide to interrupt you to remind you to breathe and deepen a pose.
After that, I had to have my well-deserved breakfast and there were options of Komalam to A2B there in the streets. All these joints were crowded and long queues waiting to get seated. I chose komala and resorted to the pongal and wada mix. Wouldnt say they were amazing, but a good fix for South Indian breakfast.
Now for the spirits, there were temples in all the streets, mostly more like south Indian ones with their big gopurams and decorations.
Now for the alter spirits, there were nightclubs with our preferences taken care as well.
The most intriguing was a museum or installation which was on the Bangla quarters adjusant for Little India. “There is a woman in here, but she is not for sex”. It brought back to me a conversation with a friend of mine, on receiving me after the trip, asked me this question, “ Whom did you meet on your trip?”. So a woman travels alone, her intention is to look for sex. Not sure if this is a reflection of their thought. In small ways with such installations, I hope that this stereotype will be broken at one point.
Beautiful are these streets with British time constructions which are buffed up with colorful exteriors.
Now comes street art in every conour
Was there at the diwali/ Deepavali time, the street decoration and melas which were setup was quite in comparison to what we have here
All in all, a little India recreated in full galore.
