POV : food in NY — a photo essay
When wanting to spend a month in the world most populous city, which is considered the cultural and financial capital of the United States, was informed that the food scenes are also quite vibrant here.
You can satisfy hunger by grab and go coffee bars to roadside trucks which serves halal food to being in a mid size restaurant with a roadside relaxed seating or a food court in chelsea or a high end restaurant.
Food is a “scene” here… no doubts to that. Anywhere I tried, the food had character to it, be it roadside juice bar or the layered crepe based sweet, which were limited edition mille crepes. These are world famous Mille Crêpes, an unforgettable cake coupling 20 alternating layers of soft cream and lacy French crêpes. Heavenly at that.
To balance the nutrition and cost, during th long stay I alternated between eating in and out. Onam the most revered festival of malayalis happened to be in the time and decided to make the whole 25 dish fare as well from scratch to majorly satisfy the sadya hunger of self and ofcourse to introduce this spectacular spread to the young ones around as well.
Last year too on onsm day was in newyork and had sourced onam sadya from a home chef here, was good as well, but this time took upon self to recreate onam in manhattan. Interestingly all ingredients were available in the Indian store here, and that too, very authentic quality as well, even the plantain leaf to serve.
Another spot which had huge variety to explore on food was Chelsea Market. Starting from indian food stalls to live noodle store to halwa store from middle East to the usual newyork fare of pizza, burger.
The noodle stores' speciality was that the chef was making the noodle live, and they tasted fresh and yummy.
The bakery products here never disappoints whether it’s from the street market or from delis or supermarkets. Always very fluffy and soft, which does not allow you to stop at one.
The most facintinating was to see a line to a slice pizza place called lindustree in West Village. It was as long as almost a km to get into ordering counter, obviously not a place to go to when hungry, but more of a planned visit with friends, where u can get a number of all slice varieties served and taste them all. Each of their slices tasted spectacular with ingredients like fig and alcohol as toppings, which made their tastes very unique.

The corn bun which was had from a obscure store in Brooklyn to the Chinese which was had in Chelsea Market annex —Buddakan and to indian varieties has in patiala were spectacular. Not to forget the Indian konkan coastal variety restaurant- kanyakumari, which had these dishes with a fusion twist.
As they say “newyork is a vibe”
So is its variety of food.
