Good people finish last
This gave me heartburn. Really how to meander in this bad world then and find a place to flourish? The sensitive, compassionate ones won't find a place to thrive and prosper. Only the rule-bending ones are the winners. Is it?
In my earlier years of employment, I always used to find myself to be hugely affected and underperforming because I never could fight against these kinds. Not extolling that my values are way higher than others in the system, but never could understand how to keep it clean and fair. Always kept away from politics to keep myself sane, and had always heard from peers or seniors that you are too naive to be in the system and hence you would lose out. So this keeping away was just kind of flighting behavior in the paradigm of fight and flight response to stressful situations. As for me, these were stressful situations to adjust to, so every time encountered one there was a growling in my stomach and the retreat button in me would be put on alarm. every morning while getting ready for work, a task used to be to make myself talk to and get motivated and go back to the same environment to wade through it and return home once more defeated.
The change came when I started working for myself and having a team to work with. With this dog-eat-dog corporate world, I hadn't had the courage to even manage a team, I always gave some excuses and deny the promotions as I wasn't yet ready to face the dogs. Once I could start my own and my partner became my boss, I came to realize, under his mentorship that I can manage teams and set some rules of operations in which such games can be eliminated. It was liberating to see how to be part of a team without mind games and pure work.
So here in this post, Ankur Warikoo says to find a place that aligns with your values or create one. I was fortunate to create one and have a team that I suppose looks forward to coming to work every day.
