My Magic Note — 9/05/2022

The anticipation of Pooram, whether it would happen or not, due to covid restrictions. The naysayers were very skeptical, but us were crossing fingers for it. We have had 2 pooram deprived years as a thrissurite or thrisssurkaran/kari it is the a big miss. Others may not be able to fathom our loss not being jostled in crowd to watch that madathil varavu, or that melam at the ilanghi tree, or kuda mattom or the vedikattu. My friends say what joy you get when you that May peak summer heat and see all this in the pooram grounds (thekinkadu maidanam). That joy which you might get seeing a marvel movie or eating ice cream or even when you are with a loved one. I don't have a comparison to it. I am a Thrissur native and I truly enjoy absorbing this cultural fest which is one of the biggest gatherings in the world without discrimination. Today morning I was grateful to have a maidanam(ground) round up of the preparations which were going on. At the corner I could see the deep pits which were opened just to put those dynamites, which would light up the night skies on 10 May, which is quite repetitive but we thrissurites finds a variety everyyear, this time the color of white was brighter than the last or the sprakle was better, would be banter when they return home by 4 AM after the firecracker fest. At another corner, I could see the elephants being pampered by many mahouts before they would be saddled with all the adornments and brought tomorrow for the line up of 30. So it is a competition to be the best presented elephant of the lineup. Then there were a lot of vendors to sell the ballons, bangles and such knick knacks, waiting intendly for their annual customers. So after the round up I was quite satisfied and was excited for the tomorrows fest!

Elanghi Thara melam — the band performance at a particular position in a temple, below a particular tree called Elanghi.

Kuda Mattom — the umbrella fest in which 15 elephants lineup on each side and exchange the umberallas with the band

vedikattu — the enormous fireworks which would fuse your brain.
