Abnegation for joy

Abnegation is the act of not allowing yourself to have something, especially something you like or want; self-denial

An act which used to be practiced when young, out of example. If I wanted good marks, I would give up eating non-veg till the exams are over. Or if I want admission to a particular college, I would do 100 circumventing around the temple, so that my wish would be granted. If I wanted to marry the person I wanted, I give up on seeing him for a year and then see if needed commitment.

Does it work this way? No is what I understand now.

Abnegation is a practice that could be done to bring discipline, but associating with a wish is a vicious circle. You would be in a whirlpool of guilt while practicing it. What if I didn't fully abide by it? The ensuing guilt and disciplinary practice that follows isn't very healthy to follow.

When something is practiced as a ritual, its actually way of grounding yourself, which beings awareness to yourself and thus more focus on the wish/goal. Which makes you put more effort towards it more and thus more chances of it being fulfilled.

You could wish for something and work towards it, and leave the rest for greater power or universe to work for you and bring forth it when the time is right and if it yours. This is the ideal situation. Mostly I still fall prey of this wish-abnegation cycle. How does it work for you?
